Care of a painting

:

1. Lean artwork only against the stretcher bar of the artwork. Never lean the front or back surface of a stretched canvas on a pointed or sharp object. This will leave a dent, dimple, or pockmark. If it has happened it can be pulled back into place by spreading water over the back of the canvas area and waiting for a few minutes then remove the extra water and let dry.

2. Choose an indirect sunlit area of your office or home because prolonged exposure to direct sunlight will fade the colors in your painting.

3. Cleaning should be done with a soft, dry cloth and nothing else. Chemicals cause drying, cracking and peeling. If the surface of your painting looks dry and dull, varnish should be applied to protect the surface. Seek out an artist for advise on the kinds of varnishes available.

4. Transporting or shipping art is simple if a few rules are followed. Keep it upright if possible. Cut cardboard, Foamcor, matboard or masonite as large as the surface front and back, then wrap with bubble wrap. If it must be wrapped for an extended period of time use Foamcor or acid free matboard for preservation purposes.

5. Museums use climate control for a reason. It helps maintain the artwork. Extreme heat, cold, or moisture can damage the surface and paint.

6. A professional conservator should be consulted if your artwork has been damaged. They know what will need to be done to repair it properly.

7. The resale of a piece of artwork, means you should notify the artist of its new owner for their records. It is proper procedures.
